What is Sublingual Immunotherapy?

Allergies are not always just a seasonal problem. For many people, they are a daily source of discomfort, disrupting sleep, reducing concentration at work, and affecting overall quality of life. We often hear patients ask, “Doctor, will I have to live with these allergies for the rest of my life?” The answer to that question is where Sublingual Immunotherapy comes in.

Simply put, SLIT is a treatment in which a very small amount of an allergen (an allergy-triggering substance) is placed under the tongue on a regular basis. Through this method, the body is gradually taught that the substance it has been reacting to is not actually dangerous. Over time, the immune system’s exaggerated response begins to decrease, in many patients the symptoms of allergies are quickly and significantly reduced.  All patients experience at least 95% resolution of their symptoms.

One of the most important aspects of this therapy is that it is often used as an alternative to allergy shots, but it does not require injections. The treatment is comfortable, carefully planned, and designed with a long-term goal in mind. Because it works not only to reduce symptoms but also to change how the body responds to allergens, it is often referred to as a “long-term allergy solution.”

If you have been taking allergy medications for years but the problem keeps coming back, it may be time to start thinking about a different approach.

The SLIT Treatment Process

Allergy Evaluation and Testing

First, the patient’s allergy history, symptoms, and possible triggers are carefully evaluated. The patient’s lifestyle, environmental exposures, and previous medical history are also taken into consideration. Allergy blood testing is performed to identify the specific allergens responsible for the reactions. Not all allergy testing is equivalent. We only utilize Immunocap™, which has been shown in human clinical studies to be equivalent, and in many studies, superior to skin prick tests, providing much less pain, since it’s just one venipuncture. These tests are almost always covered by insurance.

Personalized SLIT Formula

Based on the patient’s test results and type of allergies, a personalized SLIT formula is created.

This formula includes the specific allergens that are triggering reactions in the body.

The goal is to introduce these allergens to the immune system in a very controlled and safe way so it can gradually become familiar with them.

Daily Sublingual Treatment at Home

Following the doctor’s guidance, the patient uses a specific amount of drops under the tongue each day. The drops are usually held under the tongue for a short period so they can be absorbed through the mucous membranes in the mouth. This regular exposure helps the immune system slowly adapt to the allergens, also known as immune tolerance.

Regular Monitoring and Follow Up

During treatment, the patient’s progress is regularly monitored. Through follow-up appointments, changes in symptoms, the body’s response, and overall progress are carefully evaluated. If necessary, the treatment plan or dosage may be adjusted to ensure the therapy remains both effective and safe.

Note: SLIT therapy tends to work quickly, with most patients noticing improvement within one month.  Most patients may achieve complete resolution in their symptoms within 6 months.

Who is a Good Candidate for SLIT?

This treatment can be especially beneficial if:

Your seasonal allergies keep coming back

Allergy medications are not providing sufficient relief

You are uncomfortable with injections

You are looking for a long-term solution

Great for kids!

However, in some cases, other treatment options may be more appropriate, so proper evaluation is important.

Benefits of Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT)

Quick and Significant Reduction in Allergy Symptoms

Over time, many patients experience a noticeable decrease in common allergy symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, and itchy or watery eyes.

Reduced Dependence on Allergy Medications

As the immune system becomes more tolerant to allergens, many individuals may find they rely less on antihistamines or other allergy medications to manage their symptoms.

Long Term Immune Tolerance

SLIT works by gradually helping the immune system become less sensitive to specific allergens, which may lead to longer lasting relief even after treatment is completed.

Non-Invasive Treatment Option

Unlike traditional allergy shots, SLIT does not require injections. This makes it a comfortable and needle free option for many patients.

Convenient At Home Therapy

With proper guidance from one of our healthcare providers, SLIT can typically be taken at home as part of a simple daily routine, reducing the need for frequent clinic visits.

Typically none, as the drops are slowly increased over time.  Occasionally, the patient may experience a slight worsening of symptoms, which resolve once the amount of drops per day are decreased.

Most individuals experience a decrease in symptoms within the first month.  Complete resolution depends on how many allergies the individual has and typically how severe.  Most patients experience complete resolution of their allergies within 6 months.
